Breed History: The Canadian cow, also known as the black Canadian or French Canadian, is a unique breed of dairy cattle that was developed in Canada. The history of this breed dates back to the 17th century when French settlers brought cows from Normandy and Brittany to New France, which is now part of modern Quebec. It is currently unknown which specific breeds became the main ancestors of the Canadian cow, but it is believed that the ancestors of breeds such as Guernsey, Jersey, and Kerry were involved in its formation. The development of the Canadian cow took place under the harsh climate conditions of Canada, where it had to adapt to cold winters and limited resources. This is why the Canadian cow is characterized by high endurance and the ability to produce milk even in unfavorable conditions. For a long time, it was the most common breed in Canada, but with the development of agriculture and the emergence of new high-yield breeds such as Holstein and Hereford, its numbers significantly decreased. In 1886, a breed registry for the Canadian breed was established, and in 1895, the Canadian Cattle Breeders Association was formed to prevent the breed's extinction. In the 1970s, uncontrolled crossbreeding of Canadian cows with Brown Swiss began to increase milk productivity, which led to a decrease in breed purity. However, in 1999, the Quebec government granted the Canadian cow heritage status, and programs were initiated for its preservation. Exterior: The Canadian cow is characterized by its small to medium size. On average, a cow weighs between 400 to 500 kilograms, while a bull can reach a weight of about 800 kilograms. They typically stand between 120 to 130 cm at the withers. This animal has a compact and sturdy build. The head of the Canadian cow is small with a straight profile. Horns, if present, are usually short, curved upward, and have dark tips. The coat is typically black or dark brown, although lighter patches may be present on the udder, muzzle, and belly. Calves are light at birth, but their color gradually darkens over the first four months of life. The udder of these cows is well-developed, medium-sized, and has pronounced milk cisterns.
