Zhubron
Breed history: Zubron is a hybrid of domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and the European bison (Bison bonasus). It is the Polish equivalent of the American buffalo. This hybrid first appeared thanks to the efforts of Polish researcher Leopold Walicki in 1847. Although similar crossbreeding experiments may have been conducted earlier, hybrids could also have arisen naturally. After World War I, zubron was considered as a replacement for domestic animals. In the late 1950s, the Polish Academy of Sciences resumed research on breeding zubrons in various scientific centers, such as Białowieża Forest and Młodziko. Over 16 years of experiments, 71 animals were born, including a hybrid named Filon - the first zubron born from a female zubron. These studies continued until the late 1980s but did not yield the desired results due to financial issues, insufficient attention from state agricultural organizations, and the risk of gene mixing between bison and hybrid genes. The name "zubron" appeared in 1969 after a competition organized by the Polish publication "Przekrój." Today, a small herd of zubrons resides in Białowieża National Park, but breeding experiments are likely ongoing in Karolewo (Poland). Exterior: Zubrons are large animals. Males weigh 1200 kg, while females weigh 810 kg. Their build can be characterized as intermediate between a bison and a cow. The color is predominantly black, but other colors occur, genetically dependent on the coat of the mother cow. Housing conditions: Zubron demonstrates incredible endurance and is practically immune to diseases. It is not afraid of adverse weather – piercing winds or scorching sun. Zubrons live and reproduce even on the poorest pastures, requiring almost no attention from humans.

Diet: The basis of the diet of the zubr is, of course, grass. Juicy stems and leaves are its main feed at any time of the year. However, it should not be thought that the zubr is limited to just grass. Its menu includes young shoots of trees and shrubs, and sometimes even bark and branches. This reflects the heritage of its wild ancestor – the bison, whose digestion easily copes with such coarse food. In winter, when fresh greenery is hard to find, the zubr does not refuse hay. And if it comes across supplies of acorns, beech nuts, or berries, it will gladly eat them.
